Intellectual Property
In today's knowledge economy, companies and countries do not compete on price or hardware alone. Rather, ideas are at the heart of global competition.

Intellectual property, in the form of inventions and creations, brands, designs, trademarks, and know-how etc can be exploited for greater value and needs to be managed and protected from being copied.

Intellectual Property Management in Singapore
From creation, through protection and ownership, development and management, and finally to eventual exploitation, these processes can be taken care of in Singapore.

Besides the pro-business environment, Singapore is ranked the first most IP-protective country in Asia (Political & Economic Risk Consultancy Ltd, 2000), with effective enforcement policies to protect intellectual property rights. Our strong legal system is managed by the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore, Singapore International Arbitration Centre, Composers & Authors Society of Singapore, Recording Industry Association (Singapore), Singapore Mediation Centre.

Singapore is also member of the Paris Convention, Berne Convention, Madrid Protocol, Nice Agreement, Patent Cooperation Treaty, Budapest Treaty, Agreement on Trade-related aspects of intellectual property rights (TRIPS) and World Intellectual Property Organisation

If you are interested in managing your IP from Singapore, you may wish to visit the section for investors on intellectual property at EDB's website.

Intellectual Property Registration
To register a design, trademark or brand, or to file a patent, you will need to apply to the
Registry of Designs/Trademarks/Patents at the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore (IPOS). For full details, please visit the IPOS's website.

If you intend to apply for a patent, you may be interested in EDB 's Patent Application Fund Plus (PAF PLUS). The fund is to promote greater awareness and encourage inventors to patent their inventions; promote pervasive innovation amongst inventors, start-ups and SMEs; and encourage greater commercialisation activities to extract value from patents. Click here for further details.

Intellectual Property Awareness
If you wish to find out more about intellectual property and how they can be exploited for greater value, The Intellectual Property - Creation, Exploitation and Protection Programme (IP-CEP) by the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore (IPOS) is an IP awareness programme involving talks and seminars. IPOS, together with the Asian Patent Attorneys' Association also runs regular IP clinics to provide you with basic and general information on the various systems for protecting your inventions, brand names, designs, and creative or artistic works. The clinics are provided free-of-charge.

For full details, please visit the IPOS's website.
